Safety First: Preventing Greenhouse Injuries and Accidents

When building or repairing greenhouses, safety is always a priority. Injuries and accidents usually happen very fast. One minute you are busy making greenhouses for sale. A week later, you wake up in a hospital with bandages on your head and a terrible headache. Most likely, you will never know what hit you. It pays to observe safety rules in the workplace. Failure to do so will ensure a quick trip to the hospital at times.

Here are some safety reminders when building or repairing greenhouses for use at home or for sale to interested gardeners:

  • Always check the ladder for any sign of corrosion or cracks. The foot of the ladder should be planted firmly on the ground. Never carry anything up the ladder that would cause you to lose balance or fall.
  • Hammers should be checked for loose parts that might break or fly off.
  • Check and sharpen dull saws. Make sure that the saw blade is firmly attached to the handle.
  • When inspecting electric-powered tools and equipment, always unplug it from the power source. This prevents accidental start-ups. There is no point getting intimate with a circular saw anyway. Moreover, when using power tools, use ear plugs or ear protectors to prevent hearing damage.
  • Wear safety goggles to protect the eyes from flying debris. Small pieces of wood, plastic, or metal flying invading your eye will definitely ruin your day.
  • Work gloves help prevent being injured by splinters, as well as sharp and pointed objects.
  • For work boots, steel toes and thick soles are encouraged. Steel toes protect your feet from falling objects. Thick soles protect the feet from objects on the ground that can cause injury such as a protruding nail or a broken piece of glass.
  • Helmets prevent head injuries caused by falling objects. You may be thick-skulled as your grandmother always complains, but a falling hammer will always prove her wrong.
